How Does a GPS Car Tracking System Work?

From mobile phones to cars, most modern amenities come with GPS trackers. These technological marvels help one easily travel to any location, find out the easiest route to a destination or identify your location when you feel you’re lost. With so many advantages, it is no surprise that GPS tracker for cars and other vehicles are gaining popularity with the masses. The maximum control of the Global Positioning System (GPS) is with the United States Department of Defense as it was originally invented for their “spying jobs”. Though it is being used for various purposes across the world, they still hold the reigns. This worldwide radio-navigation system consists of 27 artificial satellites that include 24 operational satellites and 3 standby satellites. These satellites are connected to ground stations. These satellites constantly beam radio signals to identify the exact location of your GPS receiver.

So, how does the GPS tracker for cars work? The GPS device installed in your vehicle connects to the satellites. The signals beamed by the satellites are received by the GPS devices in your vehicle, which calculate the time, position and distance. A simple mathematical technique called trilateration is used to identify the exact position of your vehicle. The signals received by any 3 satellites are used to triangulate your vehicle’s location. Then the car tracking system calculates the distance between the vehicle and the satellite to exactly pin point the location. The GPS receiver in your vehicle is constantly in sync with the satellites, and so they will be able to continually provide location details.

The GPS tracker for cars can be an active or a passive tracking system. An active GPS receiver will send real-time information to the satellites and receive continuous updates on the position and travel distance. Such active trackers are perfect for fleet tracking, vehicle monitoring and other commercial purposes. Passive trackers, on the other hand, only collect and store all the data, which can be later used for research purposes. The stored data can also be sent to other trackers, if required.
